Vacation Station - What I have learned while working with accountants
Even though I am a commerce student, I would never have thought that accounting could be interesting.
In these last two weeks, I have become a vac student meaning ‘Vacation Student’, which I only realised while writing this…
Me and Numbers have never been friends, but what I have learnt and aim to explain here is numbers tell a story; don’t get me wrong, I love a story.
From figuring out how rich people handle their money to finding out what is going on in a business, I didn’t understand how much you can tell about a business or person just by looking at their bank statements. Looking at large industries and seeing a loss and entirely unpacking what that means does serve one’s appetite for curiosity.
Secondly, it was finding out what a constant struggle it is to do anything where SARS is involved! As well as some helpful tips on how to work with them.
Here’s a tip: you should upload each file separately. Otherwise, SARS may not scroll down…
And lastly, how some people organise assets and trusts in such a way as to utilise the bureaucracy efficiently and to maximise tax returns.
At one point, I asked myself, “why? Why am I doing this?”
I really don’t have an answer.
Maybe, it is to put me in a better position financially, possibly so I can get a better job in a few years.
Or also, it is very likely because my parents said I must…
But I ask you this: What beauty is there in life without any development?
If I am living or working for the sake of being able to live or work another day, then to what avail am I getting up in the morning?
See, there is just so much to know that there is no point in not knowing.
Learning is the only thing that can compel a person to work with numbers day in and day out for five years.
And my experience at Accensis has been about learning to teach me what accountants do and hearing it in the interviews.
Now even outside of Accensis, learning is a natural part of life, and I encourage everyone to be a vac student but a vacation student in life.
